On Friday afternoon Marietta College students crowded into 208 Front Street in order to print their own custom Valentines Day cards and eat homemade cookies. The Marietta College American Advertising Federation chapter, in conjunction with justAjar design press, hosted the event, “Cards and Cookies” to promote unity between graphic design and media majors.

Sara Rosenstock, the digital artist for justAjar, first reached out to the AAF chapter advisor, Lori Smith, with the idea of bringing together media and design students for an event in her shop, according to the vice president of AAF at Marietta College, Mandee Young. JustA

makes custom illustrations and commissioned posters using a hand style. According to Rosentock, they are one of only a handful of shops in the nation using this style.

The students got to learn part of the trade at the event. “We’ve been really big on the puns today,” Mandee Young said in reference to the cards attendees were creating. Some of the cards were created for sweethearts while others were centered on Mom and Dad.

“I thought it would be cute to make Valentines cards for friends or my parents,” said attendee Emily Brown. She added that it was fun to walk away from the event having made something.

The event was also a chance for students to get exposed to the benefits of AAF. According to Lori Smith, the college chapter attends career fairs and national student conferences together. Students create complete advertising campaigns for corporations and compete with other chapters, according to Mandee Young.

AAF is also a way for students to supplement what they are learning in the classroom by gaining hands on experience and interacting with professionals in the industry.

“It makes me more confident about what I’m studying in classes and what I can expect when I graduate,” said Young.

A mixture of students helped out at the event, including graphic design majors, advertising and public relations students. Even a few “petro boys” helped out Rosenstock said. The event succeeded in getting students out into the community and gave them something to do with their hands. The cookies were just a bonus.
