From Nov. 16-20, Marietta College students both international and domestic will have the opportunity to participate in a series of events held in celebration of travel, food, language, and tradition. This annual event is known as International Week.

During the five-day period, 11 events will be held on campus. Christy Burke, director of education abroad, filled The Marcolian in on the week’s highlights.

“Our goal is to provide International Week programming that inspires and educates individuals about international cultures and issues. Because of strong cross-departmental collaboration, we are able to provide a variety of programming this year that includes lectures by staff and faculty, study abroad student presentations, international cuisine, a guest poet and a photography contest,” Burke said.

Dr. Ena Vulor, McCoy professor of French, is particularly excited about the International Café, which will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Upper Gilman.

“The Wednesday International Cafe, beside offering snacks from selected parts of the globe, is also an occasion for students taking foreign languages to showcase their knowledge either through poster presentations, displays, short lessons in survival foreign language phrases, et cetera,” she said.

Those who are interested in studying abroad should make sure to stop by the study abroad presentation showcase on Friday, Nov. 20 from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in Thomas Hall, room 209. Maria Stickrath, a junior political science major, studied law at Cambridge University in the U.K. this past summer, and will be sharing her experiences with attendees.

“I had the opportunity to learn about the English legal system alongside law students from Richmond Law School, and explore the countryside. It was an amazing experience,” she said.

Vulor hopes that Marietta College students will take full advantage of this experience and absorb all it has to offer.

“As we proclaim each year, International Week is a small way in which we affirm our commitment to internationalization as a core value at Marietta College,” she said.
