Let me be the first to thank you for reading The Marcolian in 2016-2017! A new school year inevitably brings both opportunities and challenges for students, staff, professors, and organizations. Since 1872, we have endeavored to serve the campus community by providing accurate details of the state of the campus and by serving as a vehicle for the thoughtful exchange of ideas. This year, The Marcolian faces the challenge of responding to the changing nature of both Marietta College and the media landscape. How do we respond to the fact that our college’s enrollment has shrunk, making contributors harder to come by? How do we keep potential readers engaged in the era of Vines, gifs, and memes? How do we do this while remaining true to our mission and tradition?

We are hoping to accomplish this by introducing more visual components to our issues, such as our “MC in Photos” series, where anyone can submit photos for publication. Additionally, we are reemphasizing our openness to articles from staff and faculty, and opinion pieces on issues that relate to life in general or specific campus issues.

No matter who is editor-in-chief or who the contributors are, The Marcolian will remain an institution because it is one the college needs. Whether it has been revealing the alienation felt by Muslim students, investigating dining controversies, or reporting on potential curriculum changes, in recent years the Marc has helped shape the conversation around MC’s problems, potential, and future direction. As we move forward with the inauguration of our new President Bill Ruud, we will be there to document our college’s story from all sides.

We are always open to feedback and criticism, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me or any of the other editors throughout the year. Anyone is welcome at our weekly meetings at 4 PM on Tuesdays in McKinney Room 103. We look forward to your continuing readership, and hope you have a wonderful year!
