Paramore, the hard rock band that exploded out of a small Tennessee town back in 2004, has just released their third studio album "Brand New Eyes." Already it has been the best received album from the band. This album is also quite different from the two earlier albums, and in fact that is in part where the name of the album came from.
The group members all re-examined why they were making the music they were making and if that was really the direction they wanted to go in, so on this album everyone in the group seems to have "brand new eyes." According to lead singer Hayley Williams, many of the songs on this album are a lot more personal to her because they are about things she is currently going though in her life, not things that she has gotten over, like in earlier songs.
Just listening to the album, it is obvious the band has poured a lot of emotion into the creation of the songs. Unfortunately, even with all the emotion, the album still falls a little flat. The opening song, "Careful," has a great, upbeat intro to open the album with, but it doesn't really have much to hold the audience's attention. The lyrics are a little overwhelming and almost confusing at times, and it didn't take long for me to lose my interest in the entire song and just wait for it to be over.
"Ignorance" is marginally better, at least the music is pretty good in this song, but I still just can't get into the way Williams is singing. She seems to be shouting or talking more than actually singing, and very few singers can pull that off without sounding ridiculous. The one song on the album that does actually stand out is "All I Wanted," mainly because Williams is actually singing here. This is a much softer song than a lot of others on the album, and I like that, too. It's a nice change of pace from the hard rock songs that opened the album. Paramore was finally able to get everything to work together and make an amazing song. This one is definitely worth a listen, even if you skip the rest of the album.
Not everything about "Brand New Eyes" was all that bad. Almost every song has at least one good element in it. Paramore just needs to find a way to take all of those good elements and put them into every song they record. When they do that, they will be unstoppable.
