Football season is the time for rivalries, for the "My team's better than your team" and the "Please let this team lose," but when the playoffs start, something special happens.
Not only are the "bad" teams separated from the great, but at this time when the season is nearing its end, loyal fans of the fallen teams start to migrate and pick another team to root for. Maybe it's for the team who's playing a favorite team's rival, maybe it's just because this team is a hated one. Loyalties for that one, favorite team are put into the background and a new team is embraced for the remainder of the season.
Playoff season is a time for tolerance of another team, because let's face it: there is always that one team you never want to win, the one that's the rival to yours, or is simply the one you hate. As teams continue to fall, more people realize that though their team is out of the hunt, there are still new teams to root for.
As the playoff season wraps up, the AFC and NFC have champions, setting up who plays in the Super Bowl, and making people switch teams once again, because everyone knows, losses in the playoffs are harder to stomach than in the regular season. Yet, at the same time, everyone loves to watch the Super Bowl. And like with the playoffs, there is that one team you would love to see lose the big game.
So, team switchers, take the time to take a break from football; the Super Bowl's not until Feb. 5. Take some time to come off of the playoff high and gear up for the big game. But when the time finally comes to root for either the Patriots or the Giants, sit back and relax - make sure your fridge is fully stocked, feel free to decorate for the special occasion, kick back with some good company and embrace those who only watch the Super Bowl for the sometimes ridiculous, sometimes funny commercials.
