Basketball is finally back in season here at Marietta College. Our students and faculty have still been finding time to support the men’s and women’s teams despite finals week approaching. This season has been full of victories for both the men and women basketball teams.

The first home game of the season on November 15 resulted in a victory by the men’s basketball team, with a score of 92-53 against Eastern Mennonite University. The Pioneers have a 5-0 lead thus far in the season. The most recent home game against Otterbein University resulted in the boys’ fifth victory, with a final score of 78-56. The next game will be at Ban Johnson Arena on campus on Saturday, December 7, with tip-off at 3:00 pm. The Pioneers will be facing off against John Carroll University and hope to receive the same support from students and faculty from Marietta College they have had during the previous games this season.

The first home game for the women’s basketball team resulted in the Pioneers’ first victory, with a final score of 59-57 against Washington and Jefferson College. The women’s team has a current 3-2-0 record this far in the season. Their next home game will take place in Ban Johnson Arena on December 14 at 3:00 pm against Baldwin Wallace University. Students and faculty that remain on campus over the winter break are encouraged to attend and show their support.

The Marietta College basketball games are popular events for students and faculty to be involved on campus, either to show their support for our student-athletes or to pick up extra hours for a work-study job. The home basketball games provide a lot of opportunities for MC students to get work-study hours under their belt or give the students studying sports management or athletic training to get an idea of potential careers for after graduation. Elijah Balek is a sophomore at MC studying Sports Management and often works at the men’s and women’s home games throughout the season. “I enjoy working the shot clock most when working at the basketball games because I am still able to watch the games and be involved, all while working,” said Balek.

Overall, the environment of these sporting events is something that keeps the audience coming back aside from the talent exhibited by both basketball teams. “One of my favorite parts of attending or working at Marietta basketball games is the fact that we can stand so close to the court which gets everyone really into the game because everyone comes together to cheer for the players and it’s more enjoyable,” said Balek.
