If you ever visit Marietta, Ohio, you can’t help but notice the artwork around the downtown area, but how did the artwork we see today get started? We, the students in Marietta College’s Spring 2022 Mass 371 Corporate Video class, decided to find out.

Initially, we spoke with Bobby Rosenstock, a local artist who is also the head of the Public Art Committee within Marietta Main Street. Marietta Main Street’s overarching goal is to bring people together to enjoy, enhance, and preserve downtown Marietta. We had an idea to create a video that stemmed from the hope that we could raise awareness about the people responsible for many of the downtown murals.

When we started brainstorming as a group, with the support of our professor, Marilee Morrow, the initial thought was to take the project further than just increasing awareness. We had questions: Why are these murals necessary? Who is coordinating these pieces? What motivates these artists to continue with mural projects?

The story that inspired our documentary approach was from Gretta Guimond, otherwise known as Marietta Gretta. Not long ago, her family’s downtown building was getting too much unwanted attention from vandals and had some areas with unpleasant graffiti. Would opportunities to produce more positive artwork change the environment? Bobby Rosenstock also agreed to be interviewed along with another artist involved with some of the downtown murals, Alix Northrup.

During this time, when the weather permitted, we also recorded b-roll of the murals, rivers and other downtown scenes. After hours of planning, shooting, and editing, we think our final product displays the true emotion of how these murals impact Marietta. We hope you agree, these murals enhance everyone’s experience in downtown Marietta, Ohio.
