The Marietta College Pioneers (5-4) hosted the Capital Comets (0-9) on Saturday November 5th for Senior Day where the Pioneers made the final home game of the 2022 season one to remember, by controlling the game on both sides of the field. Defensively they allowed less than 100 yards and offensively went for over 500 yards.

The first score of the game would set the tone for the upcoming quarters, as senior defensive end Drake Neuberger would sack Capital quarterback Trevor Harrison-Rawn for a safety. Neuberger would finish the game with 2 sacks and 10 tackles. Coach Andy Waddle would praise the defensive effort stating “This was one of the best defensive days that we’ve had in my time at Marietta. They had five yards and one first down on a penalty at halftime. Across our whole defensive group our guys played really hard and doing a good job of fitting into the scheme.”

As for the Marietta College offense, sophomore Dawson Snyder would lead the way catching three touchdown passes, the longest of which was 49 yards. Freshman Gabe Tingle would throw that TD pass as he would come in for Connor Vierstra for a drive. Vierstra would pass for 237 yards going 14 for 18, while as Tingle completed 3 of 7 passes. “It was a really efficient day for Connor, and we were able to get Gabe some reps as well…. Gabe did some good things. He is still learning, but he brings an element with his feet that can make us more dangerous.”, Waddle elaborated.

Not only was the passing game strong, but as always senior Bryce Agnew led the way scoring two touchdowns and rushing for 114 yards. Furthermore, freshman Zion Jackson-Wilborn had his best game of the season, scoring his first touchdown and hauling 74 yards on the day.

As for Capital, they would first score in the second quarter off a blocked Aidan Bailey punt. Jaylan Anderson would make the block allowing Dom Glenn to scoop up the ball and return it for 34 yards. Despite the Comets 89 total yards they would strike again in the fourth quarter with a 10-yard touchdown pass. Marietta would respond immediately, closing the game with a final score of 50-14.

Marietta’s final game of the season is on the road against rival Muskingum University. Muskingum (5-4) has lost the last five matchups against Marietta, however that streak may snap next Saturday November 12th at 1:30 PM.
