Marietta College’s women’s lacrosse made program history with a 27-1 win against Hiram College earlier this season. Roughly halfway through the season, Marietta is at a 4-3 record. The Pioneers have not failed to rack up stats against opponents with running clock wins in three out of their four wins. As well as seeing many career firsts, and monumental moments across the field.

The Pioneers also won their first ever spring break game during overtime against Goucher College. With some challenging and emotional falls but incredible wins, Marietta Women’s lacrosse stands strong as conference games soon approach, and these ladies are ready to prove people wrong.

Hiram College competed not only in their first game, but their first time as a team in six years against the Pioneers. This year, Hiram reinstated their women’s lacrosse program after being demolished in 2020, six years ago. The Pioneers welcomed them back with a goal in the first ten seconds of the match, and a running clock before the end of the 1st quarter. All while reaching many milestones. Mallory Wiles,(Senior, Attacker) reached 200 career points, Havana Gomez (Senior, Defender) scored her first career goal, and Sidney Wiles (Sophomore, Attacker) also saw her first career goal and first career assist.

Despite a brutal loss, Hiram College stayed cheerful and energetic throughout the game. Celebrating their first program goal, scored by Lainey West, in the fourth quarter.

After high energy coming off the huge win, Marietta experienced an emotional loss as they fell to Oberlin College 5-14. High emotion came with this game because Oberlin’s head coach, Mallory Nadrah, was previously the head coach at Marietta. Nadrah was looked up to by many of the upper classmen, and after her departure many athletes were left devasted. Nerves and emotions were high before, during, and after the game; still causing a slight rift in the Pioneers momentum.

However, the team picked back up that following Saturday with yet another dominating17-4 win against Mount Aloysius College in Pennsylvania.

On March 10th, the Pioneers traveled to Bumpass, Virginia, where they fell 2-19 to nationally ranked team, The University of Mary Washington. This loss lit a fire under the Pioneers, and they turned around the following day to beat Goucher College 11-10 in overtime. Also, reaching another milestone when Mallory Wiles (Senior, Attacker) set the program record for most assist in a career.

Alayna Francis (Senior, Defender) won the draw at the start of overtime and was able to get the ball up to Molly Dickens (Sophomore, Midfielder) where she spotted Renee Mulvaney left wide open in the eight. This mistake from the other team allowed Mulvaney to score the game-winning goal.

Coming back from spring break, Pioneers will be on the road once again to take on Washington and Jefferson College, Wednesday, March 18th at 6:00 p.m. The Pios next home game is on the following Wednesday, March 25th at 7:00 p.m. versus Capital. Tickets are available in person or online at Women’s Lacrosse vs. Capital.
