Marietta Volleyball Opener

Over last weekend your Marietta College Pioneers athletic teams opened the Ohio Athletic Conference against Baldwin Wallace in volleyball, football, men and women’s soccer. Marietta Volleyball took home three straight wins against the Yellow Jackets from Baldwin Wallace. The Pioneers opened the OAC match with a 5-7 stretch after coming from a loss at Case Western and the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets on a 7-7 start.

The Pioneers would be led by the Yellow Jackets but after some massive plays from Emory Spitler and Sophie Evans with four kills and a service ace from Keira Shannon. After some errors from the Yellow Jackets, the Pioneers were leading the Yellow Jackets at 10-7. After seven of the next plays, being to Marietta’s advantage, they would lead 15-10. Marietta would close out the first set after a mistake by the Baldwin Wallace, the Yellow Jacket’s tenth error attack. The first set resulted in the score of 25-16. The second set was much different than the first with Annabelle Hacker, Sophie Evans, and Maggie Fellers getting kills and leading the Yellow Jackets early 12-2. In a turn of events, the Yellow Jackets would turn the match in their favor with a 17-14 hold over the Pioneers. The Pioneer’s got some kicks and would come back after Mia Silva and Maggie Fellers got some strong kills leading the team to a seven-point advantage over the Yellow Jackets, 21-17. To close out the second set for a win for the Pioneers, Maggie Fellers and Mia Silva would team up for blocks against the Yellow Jackets and kills from both Emory Spitler and Mia Silva would close the second set 25-18.

Following a strong second set, the third set would open to a 7-1 lead for the Pioneers. However, Baldwin Wallace, motivated and ready for a chance, would comeback 8-5. Bringing on the energy from the first two sets, Mia Silva and Maggie Fellers would speed things up with kills leading the Pioneer’s to a 11-8. Marietta would go on to have two four-point leads shutting the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jacket’s short from being able to come back. Jillian Fellers would end the third set with a kill, leading the Pioneers to win the match 25-14.

“Today’s match was a great way to open up conference play!” said Marietta Volleyball Head coach Kristi Newman. “The women did a great job of creating a high energy environment and having a next ball mentality today. That is what we will need to keep as we move onto our Match Wednesday!”
The Pioneers start Wednesday’s game 6-7 and Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets leave a 7-8 for the next game.
