As Homecoming festivities carried on through the weekend, there was one highlight and focal point of this year’s homecoming theme, the homecoming serenades. This theme was inspired by a past Marietta College tradition during homecoming weekend where homecoming court runners would perform musical theater numbers.
The Homecoming Serenades revived this tradition as a way to honor Marietta College’s rich history and provide a heartfelt homage to its alums. All numbers were performed by current Marietta College students under the direction of Department of Theater Chair, Casiha Felt, with musical direction by Professor Peter Sour, and choreography by Marietta College alum, Paige Doseck.
These performances took place all around Marietta’s campus starting Friday in front of Hermann Fine Arts Center, where six students performed a rendition of “Roxie” from the musical Chicago, in honor of the class of 1975.
Saturday morning, more performers took to the Christy Mall to continue the festivities with an execution of Bye Bye Birdie’s “Telephone Hour”, in honor of the class of 1960. Later that day, four students put on a performance of “Drive a Person Crazy” from the musical Company, honoring the class of 1970. And to wrap the day up, back on the Christy Mall several students invited a crowd of alums to join them as they danced it out to “Time Warp” from Rocky Horror Picture Show.
In the midst of a weekend filled with reunions, celebrations, and shared memories, the Homecoming Serenades offered more than just entertainment to the homecoming weekend, they embodied the community and pride that comes with being a part of Marietta College. Through song and dance, students and alum alike were reminded of the legacy they are a part of and the community that will only continue to grow.
