October—that wonderfully colorful time of year where the days get colder and you just want to curl up next to a warm fire and drink some apple cider or a pumpkin spice latte. It’s also the time of year when strange and spooky things begin to ramp up on Marietta College Campus.
Recently, in the McKinney Media Center, there have been strange noises coming from the basement and dark corners of the building.
Junior Lisa Paul stated, “I thought a raccoon broke in and was trapped downstairs. There was a lot of scratching coming from the basement, but when I saw the hair coming from under the door, I just went to the library. I had a test tomorrow, and that was not my problem.”
Many students reported similar strange events when near the McKinney basement, including: a strange red liquid leaking from the walls, long dark hair coming from the basement door or surrounding vents, children’s lullabies, and disembodied screaming.
Sophomore student, Isabel Sinclair, shared her experience from just last week, “I was going upstairs when I passed the small hallway going down to the basement. I started to hear a strange song coming from the dark, and a pale woman with long dark hair appeared in front of me.”
Sinclair continued reciting the incident, explaining how she was chased out of the building, where the woman promptly vanished.
Many students had something to say about the ghostly apparition in McKinney, with speculations circulating about why she is still on campus.
Some students speculate that she is a vengeful spirit who passes because of the stress of having to pay off her student loans and is now a warning to new students, while others think she is just a hoax and that a senior is trying to get one last scare in before graduation.
Senior Joan Wegmann commented, “With the Chlapaty’s extremely generous 55 million dollar donation, we should put some of that funding into exorcising McKinney’s basement. This would help students and staff feel safer on campus, especially after the deer incident from last year.”
Whether this is just a hoax or the acts of a vengeful past student, there is always something happening on Marietta College campus.
