Residents of Marietta and Washington County at large will have the opportunity to vote on Ohio Issue 3 during the Nov. 3 general election. The proposed constitutional amendment would add the state’s existing voter identification requirements to the Ohio Constitution.
Ohio already requires voters to present an approved photo ID when voting in person. If Issue 3 passes, these requirements would become part of the state constitution, making them more difficult for lawmakers to amend in the future.
For local residents, the amendment could affect how voting requirements are maintained throughout Ohio. Acceptable identification includes an unexpired Ohio driver’s license, state identification card, U.S. passport or qualifying military identification.
Supporters argue that adding voter ID requirements to the constitution would protect election security and maintain public confidence in the voting process. Opponents argue that the amendment is unnecessary because Ohio already has voter ID laws in place and that stricter requirements could create additional challenges for some eligible voters.
As Election Day approaches, Marietta voters will have to decide whether the current voter identification requirements should become part of Ohio’s constitution. A majority of votes in favor is required for Issue 3 to pass.
Washington County residents can find local election information through the Washington County Board of Elections, located at 204 Davis Ave., Suite B, in Marietta. The office provides information about upcoming elections and voting procedures.
